Why does RTT turn on randomly

Many of our readers complained that RTT turns on randomly for certain contacts, making the call go silent or disconnected.

Why is RTT coming up on my phone? In the US, RTT calls are automatically turned on, but even if the user disables the phone RTT and YTT, they still get turned on at some point for some contacts. This is caused by software glitches, interference, or accidental activation. Nevertheless, we tested the right solutions in the WR labs, and we’re bringing you the solutions to disable RTT for good.

How do I turn off RTT on Android and iOS?

1. Turn off RTT on Android

  1. On your Android Phone, open the Calling/Call app.
  2. Tap on the three dots icon and select Settings.
  3. Now, tap on Accessibility.
  4. Finally, select RTT and/or TTY and turn them off.

2. Disable RTT calling on iPhone

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings.
  2. Next, tap on Accessibility.
  3. Look for RTT/TTY or RTT/Textphone, depending on your iOS version, and tap on it

What is RTT and why is it on my phone?

The RTT is an acronym for Real-Time Text, and it’s a feature for fast text messaging through an IP network. It was designed especially for people with speech or hearing impediments to use in emergency situations.

As it’s very important, RTT calling is turned on by default on new phones in many countries, including the US.

How do I prevent RTT from turning on randomly?

One of our readers fixed this problem by going into the Calling app and manually deleting all the calls with the specific contact that randomly turned on the RTT. Here are some other methods to prevent RTT from turning on:

  • Remove third-party calling apps  – If you installed more calling apps, make sure to disable RTT for each of them or simply remove them temporarily to see if they were causing this issue.
  • Keep your phone and apps updated –  Whether you’re using an Android or iOS phone, keep its OS and apps updated. If RTT activation is a known bug, an update may fix it
  • Contact your service provider – If the solutions above don’t work, contact your service provider because they might enforce this setting on their updates and might have a particular solution for you.

So, if you were asking why does RTT randomly turn on with certain contacts, now you know that it’s mostly due to software glitches or interference. Our WR software specialists also provided the methods to disable RTT calling on Android and iPhone and how to prevent this issue.
