How can I fix Fortnite matchmaking error 1?

Before we start fixing this issue, there are a few quick checks to perform:

  • Restart your game or device to make sure there are no temporary issues.
  • Restarting your router can sometimes help with various Fortnite network issues.
  • Temporarily joining and then leaving a party can help. Queueing up for a solo game and canceling before it loads can sometimes work as well.

1. Remove custom code

  1. Start the game.
  2. Navigate to the Custom Options in the bottom right.
     
  3. Remove the custom code and click OK.
  4. Check if the problem is resolved.

2. Make sure that No fill is enabled

  1. Select your current game mode.
  2. Set Fill party to No fill.
     
  3. The problem should be gone.

3. Enable crossplay

On PS5, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Options menu and choose Settings.
     
  2. Locate Allow cross platform play and set it to Yes.
  3. After making this change, try to matchmake again.

On Xbox, do the following:

  1. Press the Xbox button and go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to Account and select Privacy & online safety.
     
  3. Next, go to Xbox privacy.
  4. After that, select View details & customise.
  5. Head over to Communication & multiplayer.
  6. Set You can join cross-network play to Allow.
  7. Save changes, go back to the game, and test if it works.

4. Change the matchmaking region

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Next, set a different Matchmaking region. Use a region closest to you for the best performance.
  3. After switching the server, check if the issue is gone.

  1. Navigate to the Epic Games Status page.
  2. Expand the Fortnite section.
  3. Check if matchmaking is operational.
